Writing Saturn in our May Writing Studio

Dear Patrons – There is still time to sign up for my 90 minute online exploration of Saturn, this Satur(n)day, May 9th: https://kristinebackes.com/product/saturn-friend-or-foe/ and you can use the coupon code PATRON to receive a 30% discount.

Here is the brief summary from today’s writing studio session:

In our first session of May, less than two days before the Scorpio Full Moon, we embarked on our quest to understand the planet Saturn, beginning with its archetype as the “Lord of Karma’.

My favorite definition of karma comes from Eknath Easwaran, in his introduction to The Bhagavad Gita. The purpose of karma, he tells us, is to teach the consequences of ‘shraddha’, which translates as ‘what we put our faith in’. What we believe leads to how we act in the world, and, because every action is part of the larger interconnected web of life, what we do brings an equal reaction.

Our prompts for the short writing session were these:

  • List some laws of cause and effect you (or your character) have encountered, large or small; or
  • Think of a time you sowed one kind of seed, only to have something completely different grow in its place.

Our longer writing period began with these prompts:

  • Write of a time you took action knowing there would be challenging consequences; or
  • Use this sentence to begin: “The whole experience had been a test, and I had passed (or failed!).
