Writing prompts for June 23

Today, the Moon has just crossed into Leo from Cancer, where it joined with the Sun for the weekend’s Solar Eclipse. We are still in the new phase of the Moon, which is barely becoming visible in the Western sky after sunset.

Rhythms and cycles of the Moon were the main topic today, from the 28 day cycles we know so well, to the 19-year Eclipse cycles, with Eclipses repeating at the same degree of the Zodiac on the same day of the year. For example, the last Solar Eclipse at 0 degrees of Cancer was on June 22nd, 2001, exactly 19 years ago.

Our prompts for the short writing session were these:

  • List some rhythmic elements of life, or aspects of life that create rhythm;
  • What rhythms and cycles are most obvious in your life at the moment?

Our longer writing period began with these prompts:

  • Write a story of one of the cycles you identified (monthly, six month, 19 years or other). Is it completed or just beginning?; or
  • Use Rilke’s words:

I live my life in widening circles
that reach out across the world.
I may not complete this last one
but I give myself to it.

I circle around God, around the primordial tower.
I’ve been circling for thousands of years
and I still don’t know: am I a falcon,
a storm, or a great song?
